Anambra Election: INEC Must Use Poll to Redeem Its Image — Moghalu

Addressing security concerns, Moghalu expressed confidence that members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), lacked the capacity to disrupt the election.

Labour Party governorship candidate in Anambra State, George Moghalu, has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to seize the opportunity of Saturday’s governorship election to redeem its image and rebuild public trust in Nigeria’s electoral process.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television on Thursday, Moghalu said it would be “most unfair” to dismiss INEC’s capacity before the poll, urging the electoral body to ensure a free, fair, and credible election.

“Let’s give INEC the benefit of doubt. It would be most unfair of me to come here and write it off. It has the responsibility to deliver free, fair and credible elections to the people of Anambra.
It is an opportunity for INEC to redeem its image and restore the confidence of the people in our election,” Moghalu said.

INEC has scheduled November 8 for the Anambra off-cycle governorship election, where Governor Charles Soludo of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) is seeking a second term.
A total of 16 political parties have been cleared to participate in the exercise.

Addressing security concerns, Moghalu expressed confidence that members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), lacked the capacity to disrupt the election.

He, however, appealed to security agencies to remain professional and provide a safe environment for voters to exercise their rights.

“The confidence is that the security agencies, once they become professional and do what they are expected to do, I’m certain that we will have peace and a credible environment.
IPOB, ESN, or whatever they go by, they don’t have the capacity to stop our election. I appeal to the security agencies to be very professional, do what is right, provide security, and create the enabling environment,” he added.
