ANA Condemns Rising Insecurity, Urges Federal Government to Investigate Killings in Edo and Osun

The Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) calls for action as insecurity grows across the nation, condemning recent killings and the escalation of jungle justice.

The Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) has strongly condemned the recent surge in killings and the increasing insecurity that is plaguing Nigeria. In a statement signed by ANA’s President, Usman Oladipo Akanbi, and General Secretary, Dame Joan Oji, the association called for a comprehensive investigation into the tragic incidents and a firm stance to prevent future occurrences.

ANA’s condemnation follows the murder of Hausa hunters in Uromi, Edo State, who were mistaken for kidnappers, and the deadly violence in Ilobu and Ifon, Osun State. According to ANA, these incidents have further exacerbated the already alarming insecurity levels in the country.

The association lamented the senseless loss of life, citing ritual killings, banditry, and premeditated murders as major contributors to the crisis. Ethnic and religious tensions have also fueled violence, putting many lives at risk. Despite efforts by security forces, ANA stated that their actions have not been enough to curb the ongoing bloodshed.

A particularly worrying trend, according to the association, is the rise in jungle justice, where communities take matters into their own hands, often leading to further violence. ANA condemned these unlawful acts and called on the federal government to ensure justice is served and proactive measures are taken to prevent such tragedies.

ANA also urged Nigerians to remain calm and work together with law enforcement agencies, emphasizing the need for restraint and cooperation.

In response to the Uromi killings, Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has suspended the Commander of the Edo State Security Corps, Friday Ibadin, while announcing a ban on all unregistered vigilante groups in the state. The governor’s actions were praised by the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Edo State chapter, which commended Okpebholo’s swift response in calming tensions.

The victims of the Uromi attack were reportedly on their way home to celebrate Eid Kabir with their families when they were tragically killed. The NSCIA condemned the killings, calling them an unacceptable violation of justice and urging vigilance groups to adhere strictly to the rule of engagement to prevent similar tragedies.

In a statement, NSCIA Chairman Alhaji Abdulazeez Igbinidu emphasized the importance of dialogue and understanding, urging the nation to work together to build a society free of violence and ignorance.

As Nigeria grapples with rising insecurity, ANA and other concerned bodies continue to call for decisive actions that prioritize the protection of life and justice for victims of violence.
