The 20th edition of the Akwaaba African Travel Market has officially commenced at the Eko Hotel and Suites in Lagos, showcasing the rich tapestry of African tourism. With over 15 countries represented, the event was declared open by King Nana Okatakyie Anim the first, President, Association of Royal Chiefs of Ghana and a tourism ambassador, marking a significant milestone in the celebration of African Travels, Tourism and culture.
From the ceremonial ribbon-cutting to an immersive tour of exhibition stands representing the various countries and organizations cutting across the sector, the Akwaaba African Travel Market has consistently proven its place as a major event in the West African tourism calendar, serving as a crucial networking hub connecting stakeholders across the tourism sector in the last two decades.
This year, MTN is participating at the event as its headline Sponsor, an indication that the telecoms industry is set to explore the intersection between technology and travel, further enhancing the potential for innovation in the tourism industry.
Participating states at the event include Cross River, Lagos, Akwa Ibom, and Ekiti, each promising a colorful display that highlights the diverse attractions of the individual states.

A major highlight of the event was the highly anticipated “Jollof Rice War,” a culinary showdown featuring Chefs across the vibrant cultures of West Africa. Participants in this year’s competition were drawn from various organizations within the hospitality sector in Nigeria.
Food remains an integral aspect of African culture, reflecting the distinct customs and identities of each region. Jollof rice, a popular meal among West Africans, is now the centerpiece of innovative tourism products, drawing visitors eager to explore its culinary variations.
This year, 15 Tourism Queens from countries including Cameroon, Gambia, Tanzania, Kenya, South Africa, Ghana, Togo, Seychelles, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Nigeria participated as judges in the jollof rice competition as Chefs from various organizations across Nigeria displayed an impressive array of jollof rice dishes, delighting attendees with their culinary skills.
Two private Chefs, Chef Ade Adefuye Adewunmi and Chef Oluwiyi Caleb Oshundipe emerged as winners of the Jollof Rice War, a testament to the creativity and flavors showcased by all participants as each dish celebrates the beloved West African meal.
As the Akwaaba African Travel Market unfolds over the next two days, it continues to strengthen the bonds between African nations and promote the continent’s rich tourism offerings, ensuring that the event remains a beacon of cultural celebration and business opportunity.
