Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly and Chairman of the Nigeria Conference of Speakers, Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin, has called for a new, inclusive approach to governance in Nigeria, warning that political interests continue to override national development goals.
Speaking on a live programme titled “Guest of the Month” aired by the Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State (BCOS) in Ibadan on Tuesday, Ogundoyin criticized Nigeria’s lack of continuity in governance, saying it has stunted long-term progress.
“Every new administration tosses away the programmes of its predecessor. This lack of continuity is a major obstacle to sustainable development,” he stated.
Ogundoyin praised Governor Seyi Makinde for bucking that trend in Oyo State, saying the state has enjoyed a consistent and purposeful governance style under the current administration.
Addressing the country’s worsening security situation, the speaker decried the loss of over 700,000 lives to violent conflicts and crimes as a national tragedy, and questioned the government’s silence on alleged sponsors of insecurity.
“Why haven’t we seen the list of those behind insecurity? Is it political protection?” he asked.
He advocated for state policing, dismissing fears that governors might misuse security powers.
“The federal structure is overstretched. Sub-nationals must play a bigger role in internal security. Multi-layer policing, like in the U.S., works,” Ogundoyin argued.
On the proposed six-year single presidential term, Ogundoyin voiced full support, backing Governor Makinde’s recent suggestion.
“A six-year single term will eliminate re-election distractions and allow leaders to focus on long-term national goals,” he said.
He also reaffirmed the Oyo Assembly’s support for Local Government autonomy, citing the House’s vote in favour during the last constitutional amendment.
Speaking on the economic hardship triggered by the removal of fuel subsidy, Ogundoyin acknowledged the pain on citizens and small businesses, calling for urgent measures to cushion the impact.
Finally, he urged Nigerians to become more politically aware and engaged.
“Leaders don’t fall from the sky. If we want better governance, we must be deliberate about our political choices,” he said.
