The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a weather alert warning of potential heat stress across various parts of the country. The alert, accompanied by a pictorial representation of the map of Nigeria marked with five different colors, indicates the severity of the heat stress in different regions.
NiMet highlighted that Kano, Gombe, Sokoto, Yobe, and approximately eight other states in the North are particularly at risk of experiencing extreme heat stress. Residents in these areas were advised to take precautionary measures due to the imminent danger posed by the harsh weather conditions, which could lead to sunstroke.
Sunstroke, a serious condition resulting from prolonged exposure to the sun, can cause a person to stop sweating, experience a very high body temperature, and become exhausted or unconscious.
In addition to the Northern states, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Kaduna, Kwara, Niger, Kogi, and a few other states were cautioned to prepare for potential heat stress. The agency warned that individuals in these regions could be susceptible to muscle cramps, heatstroke, and heat exhaustion.
Furthermore, residents of Ekiti, Akwa Ibom, Ondo, and Osun states were advised to exercise extreme caution as the prevailing weather conditions could also lead to muscle cramps, heatstroke (the most serious heat-related illness), and heat exhaustion.
NiMet emphasized that the weather forecast is only valid for today, Friday, April 5th. It urged Nigerians residing in the affected regions to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, and take necessary precautions to prevent heat-related illnesses.
