The Director-General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Mrs. Zubaida Umar, has instructed that all recently acquired search and rescue equipment and consumables for the agency’s zonal and operation offices be readied for swift deployment.
This directive is part of the agency’s preparations for the anticipated floods and other disasters that typically occur during the rainy season across Nigeria.
Mrs. Umar issued the directive during her visit to NEMA’s warehouses in Abuja to assess the agency’s relief materials and operational equipment. According to a statement by NEMA’s Head of Press, Manzo Ezekiel, the equipment earmarked for deployment includes mobile water purification equipment, mobile incident command vehicles, incident response vehicles, life jackets, and other lifesaving gadgets currently stored at NEMA’s warehouse and other storage locations in Abuja.
Emphasizing the importance of timely response to disasters, Mrs. Umar stressed that proactive measures are essential for achieving prompt responses. She highlighted the necessity of repositioning equipment and conducting training for personnel to operate the lifesaving assets effectively during disasters.
Additionally, Mrs. Umar directed that regular stocktaking of relief items in NEMA warehouses nationwide be conducted, with a focus on monitoring the expiration of items. This measure aims to ensure that relief supplies remain effective and usable when needed during emergency situations.
The directive by the NEMA Director-General underscores the agency’s commitment to enhancing its disaster response capabilities and ensuring readiness to mitigate the impact of natural disasters, particularly during the upcoming rainy season.
