The 22nd edition of the Nigeria Polytechnic Games (NIPOGA) is all set to kick off on Saturday, April 5, at the Federal Polytechnic, Offa, Kwara State. This year’s event will feature over 53 polytechnics, with more than 4,000 athletes competing in various sports, including athletics, football, basketball, volleyball, tennis, and more.
The eight-day event, which runs from April 5 to 12, will also showcase cultural exchange and economic activities, adding a broader dimension to the sporting extravaganza. Dr. Oluwakemi Ogungbamigbe, Chairman of the Media and Publicity Committee, emphasized that the competition would bring together polytechnic students from across the country, highlighting not only their athletic abilities but also their culture and values.
Mallam Abubakar Abdullahi, Secretary General of the Nigeria Polytechnics Games Association (NIPOGA), confirmed that 53 polytechnics, including those from Delta, Taraba, Bauchi, Rivers, Osun, and Ekiti States, have fully registered for the games. “The participating contingents have already begun arriving, and all preparations are in place to ensure a smooth and successful tournament,” Abdullahi stated.
The Rector of the Federal Polytechnic, Dr. Kadiri Kamoru, also reiterated that the 22nd edition of NIPOGA would be more than just a sports competition. “This event will serve as a platform for identifying talent and promoting international sports participation. It will also help build unity and cohesion among students, strengthening their bonds beyond the field of play,” Kamoru explained.
The 2024 games are uniquely themed “Ijakadi 2024,” drawing inspiration from Offa’s traditional Ijakadi festival, a renowned wrestling event that symbolizes equality, unity, and justice. Kamoru noted that the theme was chosen to reflect the spirit of fairness and togetherness that will define this edition of NIPOGA.
The games are expected to not only promote healthy competition but also to foster friendships and inclusiveness among polytechnic students from diverse regions of Nigeria.
