Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu temporarily handed over the reins of government yesterday to 14-year-old Miss Esther Etiyemonu, who assumed office as the state’s One-Day Governor.
Miss Etiyemonu, an SSS II pupil at Lagos State Senior Model College, Igbookuta, emerged as the overall winner of the 2025/2026 Lagos State Spelling Bee Competition, organised for public secondary schools. She was welcomed at the State House, Marina, with her two-member ‘exco’ comprising the One-Day Deputy Governor, Miss Dorcas Awoyemi, and the One-Day Secretary to the State Government, Miss Salami Jumain Olaide.
During her brief tenure, Miss Etiyemonu presided over a State Executive Council meeting, praising the state government’s achievements in education, transportation, and security. She highlighted initiatives such as teacher recruitment, renovation of public school libraries, technical college establishments, digital skills training, and improvements in road networks and Lagos Rail Mass Transit lines.
Governor Sanwo-Olu lauded Miss Etiyemonu’s performance, describing it as a reflection of rising academic standards in public schools. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to investing in education through improved school infrastructure, teachers’ welfare, and modern learning tools, while ensuring safe and conducive learning environments.
The One-Day Governor programme, pioneered by former First Lady Oluremi Tinubu, continues to nurture leadership skills and academic excellence among Lagos State public school pupils.
