₦10 Billion Aso Rock Solar Project Is a Step Toward Energy Revolution – ECN DG

Energy Commission boss says solar initiative signals Nigeria’s commitment to sustainable power and transparent governance.

The Director-General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN), Dr Mustapha Abdullahi, has hailed the Federal Government’s approval of a ₦10 billion solar power project for the Presidential Villa as a bold and transparent step toward nation building and sustainable governance.

In a statement issued in Abuja, Dr Abdullahi acknowledged the mixed public reactions that followed the announcement. While some questioned its necessity, others saw the initiative as an investment in Nigeria’s energy future.

“The recent approval of ₦10 billion for the provision of solar electricity for the Presidential Villa has stirred public debate,” the statement reads. “However, experts view the project as a strategic move toward energy sustainability and national self-reliance.”

The ECN chief pointed out that prior to the current administration, federal institutions, including the Villa, owed Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) a staggering ₦47.1 billion in unpaid electricity bills. He said the new solar solution is aimed at ending that cycle of unsustainable energy expenditure.

“This project is not just about powering the State House. It sends a strong message to citizens, investors and global partners that Nigeria is serious about energy reform,” Abdullahi added.

He also emphasized the broader impact of the solar project, including job creation in solar panel manufacturing, system design, and maintenance. He noted that this initiative will ease pressure on the national grid while spurring innovation among local engineers and entrepreneurs.

Globally, countries are already reaping the benefits of renewable energy. From mini-grid powered villages in Kenya to Germany’s near 50% electricity from renewables, Nigeria is poised to join the movement.
“This is a step toward energy equity, access, and affordability for all Nigerians,” he stated. “Let us not be distracted by the price tag but focus on the national gains and the long-term value it brings.”

He also referenced President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s broader energy goals, including ongoing projects funded by international development partners valued at over $5.3 billion. “The government is not deviating from its promise to provide power to Nigerians,” he affirmed. “This solar deployment is part of that promise.”
